Supplemental Figure 7: Stereotactic biopsy samples from different regions of the same GBM tumor display divergent histologies. H & E photomicrographs of the four paired specimens that were stereotactically removed from different regions of the same GBMs (200X). The paired specimens from tumor #5 have significant amounts of neoplastic gemistocytes and infiltrating lymphocytes, but one of them (69A34) also has neoplastic fibrillary astrocytes and multinuclear cells. While one specimen from tumor #6 has a lymphocytic infiltrate (79A34), necrosis and neoplastic astrocytes infiltrating into gray matter are present in both specimens. For tumor #7, one specimen (62A34) has abundant neoplastic gemistocytes and fibrillary astrocytes, while in the other specimen (76A34) neoplastic cells lacking eosinophilic cytoplasm and fibrillary processes are accompanied by foci of cells resembling those of an oligodendroglioma and exhibiting high levels of mitotic activity and microvascular proliferation. Specimens taken from tumor #9 also vary dramatically in that one specimen (6A35) has extensive necrosis, while the other has none. |
